What is umbilical cord blood?

Long considered a biological waste, the blood contained in the umbilical cord is recognized today for its wealth of stem cells.
Stem cells from umbilical cord blood help improve treatments for people with serious diseases such as leukemia, anemia and bone marrow suppression (bone marrow does not produce enough blood cells).

Cord blood is an advantageous therapeutic option mainly for children requiring stem cell transplantation.

Save a life - By Giving A Life!

Cord blood is collected at R3 Stem Cells partner hospitals with the consent of mothers who have registered for the Public Cord Blood Bank. Umbilical cord blood collection takes 3-5 minutes and is safe for both the child and the mother.

It is done after the birth of the child, once the umbilical cord is cut, but before the placental expulsion. Mother and child do not feel any effect. If umbilical cord blood is not removed, it is discarded as a biomedical waste, just like the placenta.

The collected cord blood is processed and tested in our laboratories. If the cord blood donation meets the standards perfectly, we freeze it, and it becomes available to a candidate for a stem cell transplant. Cord blood has a shelf life of at least 15 years under freezing.

Cord blood donations that do not qualify for the Bank are retained for research purposes if the affected mother's consent.
